PARAFFIN

In chemical terms, paraffin is a mixture of solid alkanes - otherwise saturated hydrocarbons, which is obtained in the process of refining crude oil. Paraffin compounds can differ in the number of carbon atoms in the molecule, and therefore take forms from liquid paraffin oil to hard waxes.

Depending on the degree of refining, the color of the paraffin varies from light yellow to white. It is in the form of a crystalline wax, insoluble in water and ethanol, but soluble in many other organic solvents. It is resistant to acids and bases.

Paraffin is used, among others. for the production of gloss pastes, thickening of lubricating oils, preservation of cheese and as an insulating material. Liquid paraffin is used for cosmetic and pharmaceutical purposes.

However, the most famous way of using paraffin is the production of candles and grave candles.
